Near Misses with School Children on Train Tracks

There have been some near misses recently involving children crossing train tracks before and after school.  They all have one thing in common:  children aren’t expecting a “second train”.  In all of these recent near misses, bells and lights have still been operating, but because the first train has passed, students make the mistake of thinking it’s safe to cross. This can be extremely dangerous as the track crossings in areas with double tracks always have the potential for a second train to pass.  This link shows footage of one near miss:

This year some of our Year 6s have taken up from where last year’s group left off and have put together a submission to Porirua City Council. They have made a video and on Wednesday will attend a Council hearing to present their video and talk about the negative impact of too much sugar for local children as well as asking the Council to consider some action they can take to reduce sugar items and promote water as a healthy drink for people in our area. We look forward to hearing the council’s response. The video will be available to view on our website in a few days.

    Learning to Read at Glenview

Thanks to the kind volunteer work of one of our dads we are beginning to update our website more often.

We have created a page called “Learning to Read at Glenview”. Our first post on this page explains why it is important that young children hear and join in with lots of rhyming stories, poems and songs so that they develop strong “phonemic awareness”.

Phonemic awareness is different to “phonics”. It is an awareness of the sounds in language and an ability to break spoken words into parts and put sounds together to make words. Books like Hairy Maclary and Dr Seuss are great for this, as are nursery rhymes.

If you know any rhyming songs in your language, other than English, we would love to hear about them.

    Glenview Students Take Action…

Last year some of our Year 6 students began an inquiry into the lunch packs marketed to school children and available at the local shops. They analysed the nutrition content of the packs and found that some of them contained over 40g of sugar. Stuff news picked up on this work and featured Glenview in an extended feature they ran earlier this year. The article can be found here:

Do We Have Your Correct Contact Details?

It is really important for us to have as many valid contact (and emergency) telephone or cell phone details as possible.

If you know that you have changed your address or phone number please contact the school office so we can update your records.

    It really helps
